European Financial Supervision ESMA
ESMA stands for European Securities and Markets Authority
The European Securities and Market Supervisory Authority (ESMA) is an independent EU authority contributing to the stability of the financial system of the European Union as a regulatory authority. In doing so, ESMA enhances investor protection and promotes stable and orderly financial markets.
The Markets in Financial Instruments Directive MiFID II specifies that each member state of the European Union draws up a list of regulated markets. The relevant state should forward the list to other member states and ESMA.
ESMA publishes a directory of all regulated markets on its website and updates it regularly. This directory contains the uniform code for the identification of the regulated markets as defined by ESMA in accordance with Article 65 Paragraph 6.
Extract from MiFID II, Article 18, Paragraph 10:
ESMA shall establish a list of all MTFs and OTFs in the Union. The list shall […] entail the unique code identifying the MTF and the OTF for use in reports in accordance with Articles 6, 10 and 26 of Regulation (EU) No 600/2014. […] ESMA shall publish and keep up-to-date that list on its website.
